Litter Pickers for Little Pickers began as a simple idea in January 2025 and quickly grew into a district-wide initiative focused on educating, equipping and empowering children to care for their local environment.
The project set out to provide primary schools with the tools and support needed to tackle litter while embedding positive environmental behaviours from a young age. By placing practical action alongside education, the initiative aims to create lasting cultural change—encouraging pride, responsibility and community spirit among the next generation.
Project Reach and Impact
Following outreach to primary schools across the district, the response was overwhelmingly positive. A total of 45 schools signed up to take part, with requests for 1,800 litter pickers and 4,500 educational books. In total, more than 7,000 children are expected to benefit from the project. This scale of engagement demonstrates both the demand for environmental support in schools and the shared commitment to fostering long-term behavioural change through education.

Fundraising and Financial Support
The project successfully surpassed its fundraising target of £13,300, ultimately raising over £13,550. This funding was secured through a combination of sources, reflecting a strong community-backed approach:
- Grant applications to Parish and Town Councils
- Allocation from the SDC litter budget
- County-level funding bids
- A successful crowdfunding campaign raising nearly £5,000
- Contributions from local businesses and supporters
This diverse funding model highlights the collaborative effort behind the project and the widespread belief in its value.

Fundraising Activities and Community Engagement
A wide range of creative and physically demanding fundraising activities helped bring the project to life, while also raising awareness and building community involvement. These included:
- A 26-mile all-night walk and litter pick
- A 100km cycling litter pick challenge
- A half marathon litter pick
- A 21km paddleboard litter pick along the canal
- Participation in a summer solstice litter pick
- Thousands of pieces of litter removed across all activities
- Dozens of school assemblies delivered to engage and inspire pupils
These efforts brought together volunteers and supporters who contributed time, energy and enthusiasm, often in challenging conditions. The journey fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and demonstrated the power of collective action.

Current Status and Next Steps
With all funds now raised, the project has moved into the delivery phase. Equipment is currently being purchased and prepared for distribution. Schools are scheduled to receive their resources after the May half term, alongside guidance and ongoing support to ensure effective use. The aim is to provide children with accessible, practical tools that enable them to take action regularly and independently.
Let’s celebrate
Litter Pickers for Little Pickers showcases what can be achieved through determination, community collaboration and a shared commitment to positive change. By combining education with hands-on action, the project not only addresses the immediate issue of litter but also nurtures long-term environmental responsibility in young people. With strong foundations now in place, the initiative is set to make a lasting impact—creating cleaner spaces and a culture of care that will continue to grow for years to come.
